Members of the AgWest Farm Credit Local Advisory Committee (LAC) came together from across the 7-state territory to meet in Phoenix, AZ Jan. 30-31 for their inaugural association-wide meeting. Local advisors had an opportunity to network and build relationships with each other, hear insights from industry and economic experts, and receive updates about the association’s key goals and initiatives for the future.
AgWest Local Advisory Committees are spread throughout 15 different regions of the AgWest territory consisting of Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Washington. In total, 227 LAC members meet regularly within their regions to provide feedback and insights, share market information, and serve as a communication link between customers, the AgWest Board of Directors and management.
The January meeting opened with a welcome message from AgWest President and CEO Mark Littlefield, who reminded LAC members about the value the association brings to its customers, who are also its owners, “We were created with a cooperative organizational structure. It's your organization. It's owned by you. It's led by you, and we are the vessel that brings to life those things that are important to you.”
Todd Van Hoose, CEO of the Farm Credit Council provided an update on political and policy issues relating to the Farm Credit System and the upcoming Farm Bill. Economist Marci Rossell shared her perspective on the current macroeconomic environment, including interest rates, inflation and implications for ag producers and business.
AgWest senior leaders also provided updates related to the current financial state of the organization and plans for its stewardship giving programs, which the LAC plays a key role in guiding.
Kent Stenderup, LAC member from Bakersfield, CA, is passionate about his involvement in the committee and the value it brings to the organization. “The LAC is an extra layer of communication out to the membership – who are the co-owners of Farm Credit - and it gives us a high level of input. Through the LAC, we get to share with one another and learn from others.”
“I was fascinated learning about the variety of crops and commodities that are represented at AgWest,” said Tara Becken, LAC member from Big Timber, Montana. “I really enjoyed the time spent learning about what others are doing across the country and the challenges they face. Even though we're thousands of miles apart, the challenges are very similar.”
