Hiring the next generation and investing in the future of agriculture

September 27, 2024 by Macey Gomes and Alyssa McClelland, Interns

AgWest Farm Credit’s internship program shapes the future of agriculture by bridging generational gaps and infusing fresh perspectives. To explore the program and its impact, we spoke with Addie Grow, Senior Talent Acquisition Advisor and intern coordinator. In her early career, she worked at Whitworth University, where she helped business students connect with companies for job opportunities. This experience led her to AgWest, where she now oversees campus recruiting and the internship program.

Overview of the intern program at AgWest

In 2024, AgWest hired 27 interns. The program exposes interns to a variety of departments such as credit, specialized lending, insurance and appraisal, allowing interns to explore all aspects of their assigned branch. The goal is to develop skills while exploring various career opportunities through a series of tailored learning modules. Addie also shared her experience in collaborating with the Learning and Development department to regularly update the Intern Planning Guide so that interns receive an improved learning guide for self-directed learning each summer. She stresses the significance of continuous improvement and nurturing emerging agricultural leaders, saying, “Our interns bring new ideas, feedback and energy, vital for the growth and sustainability of AgWest.”

Each intern undertakes an individual project. “We want interns to own something that they can contribute to the organization,” says Addie. AgWest desires for this experience to have a beneficial influence on interns’ careers, regardless of whether they continue their careers with AgWest, Addie says.

The added value of Generation Z

All AgWest interns are part of a new generation of employees – Generation Z. Gen Z, born between 1997 to 2012, is the first generation to grow up with digital technology and the Internet as a constant presence from an early age. People born in this generation are often innovative, constantly pushing the boundaries to discover new solutions.

Millennials (1981-96) and Generation X (1965-80) are often more resourceful and experienced than their Gen Z counterparts, using their knowledge to solve challenges and make informed decisions. Gen X and Millennials are known for being resilient, resourceful and engaged, creating a collaborative environment where proactive thinking is welcomed and traditional knowledge is preserved.

Gen Z interns bring unique strengths, such as innovative ideas, tech-savviness and a strong focus on sustainability. A challenge for members of this generation is their need for immediate feedback, which can affect their patience in a slower-paced career environment. They also offer fresh perspectives and invigorate our processes, driving continuous improvement.

To recruit for prospective interns, campus ambassadors represent AgWest at universities and career fairs, meeting students face-to-face to make a connection. AgWest also uses social media and LinkedIn to promote opportunities to those who can’t engage in person.

Connecting generational perspectives for a stronger future

Now, how can all these generations work together? Addie advises older generations to be open to compromises with new employees. “Compromises and improvements must be made, with give and take on both sides,” she says. “The end result is a better product overall.”

Addie suggests that Gen Z should leverage the wisdom of experienced colleagues. “Harness your energy, new ideas and innovation into the right direction,” she advises. This balanced approach between generations can enhance and revitalize the workplace.

At AgWest, all interns are paired with knowledgeable professionals, creating a dynamic balance that benefits the entire association. This relationship enriches both interns and long-standing employees, fostering a culture of mutual learning and respect. Having different generations work effectively together is crucial for AgWest’s success, as it helps keep the cooperative strong and innovative.
